Hougang a trace back in history as a fishing port, was once a large piece of forested land. Surprisingly before it has pig farms back then, now the land was transformed into new HDB town with over 40,000 housing units interspersed with pockets of private residential areas.

Hougang is regarded as part of the "heartland" of Singapore, a significant distance away from the Central Area.
